You shipped 500 units to a Fulfilled by TikTok warehouse. Seller Center says you have 471. Nobody told you anything. Where are your 29 units — and who pays for them?
The answer: TikTok pays for them. But only if you notice, only if you file correctly, and only if you file within 60 days. Miss the window and that inventory is a write-off.
We audit FBT accounts every week, and we have yet to find one with zero discrepancies. Here's how the system works and how to get your money.
How FBT inventory goes missing
Fulfilled by TikTok runs on a network of 14+ US fulfillment centers, largely operated by subcontracted 3PLs. That subcontracting matters: your inventory is handled by warehouse operators with varying processes, and units get lost at every stage — inbound receiving (you shipped 500, they checked in 480), storage (units damaged, misplaced, or miscounted in the warehouse), outbound (wrong item or wrong quantity shipped to the customer), and returns processing (customer returns that never make it back to sellable stock).
TikTok's policy is actually seller-friendly on paper: FBT packages are covered up to the total retail value for logistics-caused refunds and returns, and when a returned unit can't be restocked, reimbursement is supposed to be processed automatically.
"Supposed to" is the operative phrase. Automatic reimbursement catches some cases. It does not catch receiving shortfalls, storage shrinkage, or miscounts — those only get paid when you find them and file.
Step 1: Find the discrepancies
Run this reconciliation monthly (weekly if you're doing real volume):
Inbound check. For every shipment to FBT, compare units shipped (your manufacturer invoice / packing list) against units received in Seller Center. Any shortfall is a claim.
Inventory snapshot check. Beginning inventory + received − sold − returned-to-you should equal current sellable + reserved + damaged. If the math doesn't close, the gap is your claim.
Returns check. For every customer return on an FBT order, confirm the unit reappeared in inventory (sellable or damaged) or generated a reimbursement. Returns that vanish into neither bucket are the single most common leak we find.
Damage check. Units FBT marks as damaged in-warehouse should be reimbursed, not just quietly removed from your sellable count.
Keep your manufacturer invoices organized — TikTok can ask for proof of inventory value, and the seller who can produce a clean invoice gets paid faster.
Step 2: File the claim
In Seller Center, claims for FBT logistics issues go through the support ticket flow: FBT Issue → Logistics-Related Reimbursement Claims. Include order/shipment IDs, the discrepancy math, and invoice documentation of unit value.
Two deadlines to tattoo on your wall:
- 60 days from order creation date for FBT logistics-related reimbursement claims.
- 90 days from delivery for claims under the TikTok Shipping logistics coverage policy.
Approved reimbursements land in your settled statement, typically within about 5 business days.
Step 3: Verify the payment
An approved claim isn't money until it's in your statement. Track every claim through to the settled statement line item. We regularly see approved claims that pay out at the wrong value — reimbursed at a fraction of retail because no invoice was on file. Dispute those too.
What this is actually worth
On Amazon, unclaimed reimbursements typically run 1–3% of revenue. FBT is younger, run by subcontracted 3PLs, with fewer sellers auditing — and per claim, error rates we see are at least comparable. For a shop doing $100K/month through FBT, that's roughly $1,000–$3,000/month leaking — silently, with a 60-day expiration on every dollar.
One TikTok Shop brand we audited recovered $30,800 in a single month. Another, a smaller supplement brand, recovered $13,900 in February. Neither knew the money was missing.
The honest DIY-vs-outsource math
You can absolutely do this yourself: the reconciliation above takes a competent ops person a few hours a month, plus claim filing and follow-up. The trade-off is consistency — miss a month and the 60-day window eats your oldest claims.
If you'd rather not own it, this is literally all we do. Free 24-hour audit, we file everything within TikTok's ToS, and we only take a percentage of what we actually recover. No recovery, no fee.
FAQ
Does TikTok automatically reimburse lost FBT inventory? Partially. Units that can't be restocked after a return are supposed to trigger automatic reimbursement. Receiving shortfalls, warehouse shrinkage, and miscounts generally are not auto-detected — you must find and claim them.
How long do I have to file an FBT reimbursement claim? 60 days from the order creation date for FBT logistics-related claims; 90 days from delivery for TikTok Shipping logistics coverage claims.
How much does TikTok reimburse for lost inventory? Up to the total retail value of the item for covered logistics issues. Having manufacturer invoices on file protects your valuation.
Where do FBT reimbursements show up? In your settled statement, usually within ~5 business days of claim approval.
